This collection of 10 essays offer literary criticism of a variety of works of the Harlem Renaissance, the African American cultural explosion centered in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem and generally recognized as lasting from 1920 to 1940. In the words of editors Tarver (English, Texas Christian U.) and Barnes (English, Hampton U.), the essays offer "a number of perspectives and intertextualities from which to explore the intersections of race, gender, class, and literary discourse." Among the authors examined are Jessie Fauset, Alain Locke, Wallace Thurman, and Countee Cullen. Writings by Langston Hughes, arguably the greatest literary figure of the Harlem Renaissance, concern three of the contributions. The reference to "new voices" in the title of the collection is derived from the fact that most of the contributors are just beginning in the field. Distributed in the US by Associated University Presses. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
