Anaerobic bacteria are important pathogens in many different types of infection and may be involved in a major way in certain other processes, such as the bacterial over growth syndrome. The most common types of infection in which anaerobes are often important are skin and soft tissue, pleuropulmonary, intra-abdominal, female genital tract, and oral and dental infections, but essentially all types of infections, at any site in the body, may involve anaerobes. Most often, anaerobes are found as part of a mixed flora but solitary infections occur as well. The indigenous flora of the body is the principal reservoir of these organisms but some clostridial infections may have an exogenous source. The spectrum of severity of anaerobic infections varies from severe and life threatening to mild. Characteristically, anaerobic infections are marked by tissue necrosis and suppuration.
