Lighthouses, one of the most important aidsto navigation for seafarers, have been a very importantelement of worldmaritime since ancient times. Lighthouses are the most important guides ofseafarersin our country, which is surrounded by seas on threesides andhas a coastline of 8,333 kilometers.Anatolian geography, which is located onone of theworld’s oldest trade routes, is also home to some ofthe oldestknown lighthouses in history. The construction of modern and plannedlighthouses became amodernnecessity with the developing technological possibilities andincreasing maritime trade, and from the1850s, modernlighthouses started to be built on thecoasts of our country. Among our lighthouses,which have been serving seafarers with their increasingnumbers over theyears, our historical lighthouses,which we consider as cultural and historicalheritage with their unique architectures, are of greatimportance.It is also of great importance that thecultural heritage of our historical lighthouses, which have survivedfrom theOttoman Empire, a maritime state, and continue to serve within ourorganization, the authorityon lighthouses and navigational aids, is passedon tofuture generations.
