The Staff Ride Handbook for the Battle of Olustee, Florida, 20 February 1864 by Michael G. Anderson ISBN 9781940804675, 1940804671 instant download

A staff ride is a military educational technique that involves the on-site study of a historical battle or campaign to learn from past decisions by examining terrain and leadership challenges in the original context.
-
The Staff Ride Handbook for the Battle of Olustee offers a highly relevant, tactical-level staff ride of an often-overlooked American Civil War battle. In it, readers will find analysis of leadership and resource management. In a departure from some of the more popular staff ride studies, this battle was a tactical defeat for the US force. To study defeat instead of focusing on a success provides an important vehicle for both immediate edification but also a lesson in the art of learning. Of importance to this study, a significant portion of the US Army at Olustee was African-American infantry regiments led by white officers with African-American noncommissioned officers. These formations first saw combat in 1863. The extensive use of these United States Colored Troops (USCT) and the state African-American volunteer units in Florida makes that theater an ideal one to examine factors contributing to their performance.
-
The handbook is structured for a single-day ride with 9 stands.
