This book is a fairy story, of sorts, and I really hope you enjoyed getting swept up in it as much as I enjoyed writing it, which was very much indeed.

If, however, you know London, you probably thought, ‘But special books are kept at the British Library, not the British Museum!’ as you were reading the first few chapters of this book.

That is absolutely true. But I love the magic of the British Museum – the British Library casts a spell of its own, but it is redbrick and square and not quite as romantic as when I first arrived in London and found the British Museum Reading Room like something out of a fairytale itself. Because of this, I felt I had to include it in Mirren’s story. In reality, most of the books in the British Museum’s Reading Room were rehoused in the newly-built British Library building from the late 1990s. Now, the British Museum Reading Room is only open to the public for guided tours.

So I hope you accept this explanation and forgive the artistic license – and happy holidays!
