The Prayers to the Orient of Light: A translation and text of Shihābuddīn Yaḥyā Suhrawardī’s The Spiritual Influxes and Sanctifications (al-wāridāt wa’l-taqdīsāt) by Wahid Azal ISBN 9780646724720, 064672472X instant download

The Prayers to the Orient of Light presents the first complete English translation—accompanied by the fully vocalised Arabic text—of al-wāridāt wa’l-taqdīsāt (“The Spiritual Influxes and Sanctifications”) by the Illuminationist master Shihābuddīn Yaḥyā Suhrawardī (d. 1191). Composed near the end of his short but incandescent life, this collection of liturgical recitals and visionary supplications reveals a suprarational mysticism in which Qurʾānic, Neoplatonic, Zoroastrian, and Hermetic currents interpenetrate in a uniquely Ishrāqī (Illuminationist) idiom. More than devotional texts, these are metaphysical proclamations—what Suhrawardī himself names āyāt (signs/verses)—that function as a kind of Ishrāqī scripture. This edition offers not only a faithful rendering of their elevated cadence into a King Jamesian register of English, but also restores their significance within the wider tradition of Islamic theosophy and comparative esoteric liturgy.
