The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World: Volume VI, Rhodes to Western Sicily by Paul Cartledge, Paul Christesen ISBN 9780199383535, 0199383537 instant download

The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World, a collaborative effort by more than forty eminent scholars, offers twenty-two detailed and comprehensive studies of key sites from across the Greek world in the period between c. 750 and c. 480 BCE. During that period, Greeks confronted a series of demographic, political, social, and economic challenges and generated an array of responses that transformed the ways in which they lived, worked, and interacted. Much of what is now seen as distinctive about Greek culture--such as democracy, stone temples, and nude athletics--first developed during the Archaic period.

THIS VOLUME FORMS part of a larger project, the Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World (OHAGW), that consists of 22 in-depth studies of city-states, sanctuaries, and regions, ranging from Massalia in the west to Cyprus in the east and from Cyrene in the south to Lesbos in the north.

Rhodes has long attracted scholarly attention, and much has been written about the island, but ongoing publication and restudy of archaeological finds mean that our understanding of Rhodes’ history continues to evolve and deepen.

Sicyon ranks among the major ancient cities of the Peloponnese in the Archaic period in terms of the size of its territory, its mobilized forces in the Persian Wars, and its strong presence in Panhellenic sanctuaries.

Most first encounters with ancient Syracuse usually center around a handful of well-known historical events and people, such as the empire of Dionysius I and his Carthaginian Wars, the philosopher Plato’s three visits to the city, and the inventive genius of Archimedes.

Thebes has a long history in pre-Classical times that demonstrates how the rise of the Hellenic city-state, while deeply rooted in place, was intertwined with vivid imaginations of belonging.

Western Sicily is that part of the island corresponding to the modern provinces of Palermo, Trapani, and Agrigento.
