The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, May/Jun 2022 by VV.AA. ISBN 1095-8258 instant download

Back in the 1960s, the Sun Ra Arkestra led by Sun Ra himself, aka Herman “Sonny” Blount, used to release toy robots with flashing lights and mechanical prop UFOs, flying saucers, into the audience during their performances. Dressed in a myriad of brightly colored, handmade costumes, full of sequins, beads, Egyptian symbols, flowing robes and African prints, the bandmembers would parade around the stage in the middle and ends of songs, offering a spirited sense of pageantry and otherworldliness.

If The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction had original soundtracks for its issues, like the memorable cover art the magazine has published over its many years, I’d like to think that Sun Ra would have been on the commissions and playlists, as the Arkestra’s aesthetic speaks to so much of the imaginings in the magazine’s pages.
