Under the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1821, Florida became part of the United States, where Spanish settlers had established forts, cities, and farms as early as the 16th century, well before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.Texas seceded from Mexico in 1836. When Texas was admitted as a state to the United States in 1845, the Spanish settlers there became U.S. citizens.
