The woman in the witness box sobs. Tears stream down her cheeks. She

Charles Holborne, the barrister facing her across the well of the court, is

time and, again, the woman shakes her head. Charles’s impression is that if
she were to accept the offer of an adjournment, she might not find the
strength to return to the witness box. The poor woman’s only function in
the proceedings was to identify her daughter’s body, and that she has
already done. But Charles has further questions.
She gave her details as “Mrs Fairfax, school cook” and judging from the
way she speaks, she has little education. To Charles, a Cockney himself,
her accent places her origin as just east of London — Essex probably,
possibly Kent.
The grief of this simple, dignified woman has affected all the actors in
the drama...
