The first meeting of the International Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches was held in Cairo, Egypt, Jan. 27-30, 2004, bringing together representatives of the entire family of Eastern Orthodox Churches and the Catholic Church. Since then, the Commission, composed of some 30 members, has met every January for a week-long plenary session, alternately in Rome, at the invitation of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and in other countries, at the invitation of the Eastern Orthodox Churches. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of this theological dialogue, this commemorative volume contains the documents agreed upon by the Commission, the annual reports, and some of the speeches given during the sessions. The reader will be able to appreciate not only the profound ecclesiological insights of the documents but also the incredible richness of the dialogue, in which the traditions of the Coptic, Syriac, Armenian, Malankara, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Latin Churches are represented.
