(Ebook) The Beautiful Spy (The Life & Crimes Of Vera Eriksen) by David Tremain ISBN 9780750991070, 9780750988957, 0750991070, 0750988959

In September 1940 a beautiful young woman and two men arrived from occupied Europe by Luftwaffe Seaplane. They successfully paddled ashore in their rubber dinghy, and then all three of them landed undetected on the shoreline of Scotland. This was meant to be yet another well planned attempt by German Military Intelligence to penetrate its way by stealth through the British defences. After getting ashore they were expected to lay low, infiltrate and make contact with those 'loyal' British Supporters of the Third Reich in the highest layers of British High Society. Then they were to wait, blend in, disappear and gather intelligence. Their main role, alongside that of their British supporters, was to carry out acts of sabotage as part of the expected invasion which was due to take place sometime soon. That was the plan.Often described as 'the Worlds most beautiful spy", Vera Eriksen (real name Vera Schalburg 1914-1946) could almost rival The Great War's Wartime spy Mata Hari and the various fictional 'Bond girls' who followed her. Perhaps the archetypal 'femme fatale' of the Second World War, her story is less well-known than it should be. Like most spies, nothing about her background is clear-cut, or straightforward. Many of the facts surrounding her life are contradictory; some are speculation, or simply fantasy; the rest have been expunged from her files, and few can be verified absolutely. The reasons why have remained hidden to this day and may never be uncovered. Yet in spite of her alleged involvement in espionage, she was a somewhat tragic figure who was yearning for her lost love. When she set out on her spying mission in September 1940, the love of her life had just been killed. It is a story shrouded in mystery and intrigue, and clouded by the mists of time. Even her fate at the hands of British Intelligence is still contentious. We will probably never know who the real Vera was or who she became in later life after the war. It suited her to be enigmatic - and that is the way she will seemingly always remain. In 2013 her story was turned into a German TV Feature Film called 'Die Spionin'  staring Valerie Niehaus. The book features 20 b/w images.David Tremain is a journalist and author. His first book Rough Justice: The True Story of Agent Dronkers Captured by the British was published in 2016. And He is the author of 2018's Double Agent Victoire.
