(Ebook) Springer Handbook of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics by Gordon W. F. Drake (Editor) ISBN 9783030738921, 3030738922

The field of atomic, molecular, and optical physics is the oldest part of modern physics, and yetit provides the foundation upon which all the rest is built. The previous edition of the SpringerHandbook of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics was published in 2005, which was theInternational Year of Physics celebrating the Annus mirabilis of Einstein exactly 100 yearsearlier. 2005 also marked another in a long sequence of Nobel Prizes awarded for work in thearea of AMO physics, this time to Roy Glauber, John Hall, and Ted Hänsch for their work onquantum optics and high-precision measurement. The sequence continued with the 2012 prizebeing awarded to Serge Haroche and DavidWineland for their work on measuring and manipulatingindividual quantum systems, and the 2018 prize to Arthur Askin for the development ofoptical tweezers, and Gérard Mourou and Donna Srickland for high-intensity ultrashort laserpulses. Most recently, the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2022 was awarded jointly to Alain Aspect,John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger for experiments with entangled photons, establishing theviolation of Bell inequalities, and pioneering quantum information science. The 2015 Prizefor neutrino oscillations and the 2017 Prize for gravitational waves also made essential useof the techniques of AMO physics for their success. 2015 was also the International Year ofLight, where the ever-expanding power and versatility of lasers played a prominent role; thiscontinues to provide a unifying theme for much of AMO physics. The intent of this Handbook is to provide a ready reference for the principal ideas, techniques, and results that are common to all these areas of research where exciting advancescontinue apace. The success of the previous 2005 edition and advances in the field providethe motivation for the current revised edition, with the expectation that it will continue as astandard reference source for the field.
