IMAM ṬAḤĀWĪ’S
INTRODUCTION
“I was asked by one of my fellowscholars to write him a book in which I discuss aḥādīth transmitted from the
Messenger
related to law. Such aḥādīth which appear contradictory in
the eyes of heretics and some weak-minded Muslims due to their ignorance
as to which ruling was mentioned first and which was abrogated, and
which of them must be acted-upon based on the evidence from the
Articulate Book and agreed-upon Sunnah. He asked me to arrange the
material into different sections, and to set down, in each section, the
relevant information concerning the aḥādīth present therein. Such as,
pointing out which ones were abrogating and which ones were abrogated.
In addition to this, to mention the scholars’ interpretation of the aḥādīth
and the arguments they advance against each other. Furthermore, to
support the position which is soundest to me according to the standards
applied to authenticate such aḥādīth in light of the evidence from the Book,
or the Sunnah, or unanimous consensus of the scholars (ijmāʿ) or soundly
established (mutawātir) verdicts of the Companions or their Successors
(tābiʿūn).
