There is obvious mutual attraction, but Gabe has previously thought of himself as "straight" and the two of them have to wade through that obstacle to begin to have feelings for each other. Sam and Gabe end up sleeping together, as do the characters grow together throughout the story. Jennifer encourages the pairing, knowing how much Sam cares for Ellie. In the end, Sam wins the Scoopfest and Gabe turns down a high-paying job offer in DC, buying the building where Sam will run their new ice cream shop, "Scoops on Maple." The novel culminates in Gabe proposing to Sam at the shop and all signs point to a happy-ever-after for the queer teacher and (not so) straight dad. The series, Love in Maplewood has 9 other books by different authors, all featuring a low-angst, queer romance that takes place during one of Maplewood's famous town festivals.
