Sometimes you go forward to go backwards–or something like that. As I
sit to type my note, I can’t help but think of all the charity anthologies
Ricky’s Back Yard did back in the day. We had a staff of three people,
including yours truly. A funky ‘zine like thing that came out with the
goal of giving all money to charity.
Through the years, we morphed into a horror site but kept the charity
aspects alive. HauntedMTL has the dubious distinction of giving away
more to charity than we’ve received as operational income. I guess
Morrison was wrong. To some extent, soul can still beat money.
This collection is near and dear, or so they say. Queer as Hell–the title
came to me because I kept mishearing our LGBTQ podcast name. That
name? Club Misery. Yeah, ol’ Jim needs new ears. Since the title of
Queer as Hell was vacant, I decided it would make a fitting anthology
title–one where a percent of the money goes to various (some grass
roots, some not) LGBTQ charities.
The collection of stories, curiosities, really, is one of which I’m proud to
be connected. We have everything from flash fiction to longer pieces;
laughs to chills; sadness and lightness. All the things that make us
people. I think that’s the key here. It shows our common make up. We
are, after all, stardust.
