(Ebook) Purchasing and supply chain management by Kenneth Lysons & Brian Farrington ISBN 9780273694380, 0273694383

The first edition of this book appeared in 1981 as a short revision aid for purchasingstudents. In the intervening years the book has increased in size and content. Thepresent seventh edition may fairly claim to be the most comprehensive textbook onpurchasing and supply chain management published in the UK. In particular it offersthe following features provided by no other competing UK text:n An Instructor’s Manual and PowerPoint slides online at www.pearsoned.co.uk/lysons.n Every chapter has a case study, discussion questions and sample past examinationquestions taken (by permission) from the examinations of the Chartered Institute ofPurchasing and Supply.n A glossary of purchasing and supply definitions, acronyms and foreign words andphrases.n An index of names and organisations referred to in the text. There are three important changes in this seventh edition that require special mention.1. There is a change in authorship; Dr Brian Farrington is now co-author with Dr KennethLysons. Dr Lysons and Dr Farrington have been friends and colleagues over manyyears. Together they bring to the writing of this book both sound academic knowledgeand a wide practical experience of purchasing and supply chain managementboth as practitioners and consultants.2. There is a change of content. To allow for more in-depth discussion of purchasingand supply chain issues the chapters on storing supplies, transporting goods and humanresources in the supply chain included in the sixth edition have been omitted. Newchapters relate to supplier relationships and product innovation, supplier involvementand development. Every one of the remaining chapters has been extensivelyrevised. Redundant material has been ruthlessly pruned and a substantial amountof new material added. While a separate chapter on public sector purchasing hasnot been included there are a number of references at appropriate places throughoutthe book.3. The sixth edition stated that the book aimed to be both a textbook for students anda guidebook for practitioners. As a textbook, coverage is provided of the syllabus of the Chartered Institute ofPurchasing and Supply at both the Foundation and Professional stages.Candidates for all the papers comprising the Foundation Stage examination will findthe book helpful and complete coverage is provided of the Introduction to Supplyand Materials Management syllabus.
