Psychology of Gang Involvement by Wood, Jane L. & Mallion, Jaimee S. & Frisby-Osman, Sarah instant download

Over the past hundred years, gangs and gang members have received considerable research attention, culminating in a wealth of compelling insight regarding critical factors that underpin involvement in gangs. This knowledge has been used to inform criminal justice policies, and prevention and intervention responses to gang membership. Yet, despite having a deeper understanding of gang involvement, we still do not fully understand how psychological characteristics and processes motivate individuals with identical backgrounds to differentially embrace or shun gang membership. We also do not yet fully understand the psychological impact that gang membership has on its members. For example, it is well documented that gang membership amplifies members’ criminal activity beyond levels before or after their membership, but we do not yet know the psychological factors that contribute to this gang-related effect. A deeper understanding of the psychological impact of gang membership is needed so gang theories and intervention strategies are fully equipped to prevent and address gang involvement. The current volume provides unique insights into some of the key issues regarding the psychology of gang membership and emphasizes the importance of understanding more about the psychology of gang membership as the field moves forward.
