The eld of bioinformatics is advancing at a remarkable rate. With the rapid
development of new analytical techniques that use the latest advances in machine
learning and data science, today’s biologists are gaining fantastic new insights into
the natural world’s most complex systems. An increasing number of students are
interested in learning bioinformatics, but most of the bioinformatics textbooks are
theory-based and lack a lab-based manual that can assist them in handling large
biological data. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to have a lab manual that can be
integrated with bioinformatics courses.
This book is aimed at students, faculty, and researchers in biology, health/medical
sciences, agricultural sciences, bioengineering, biotechnology, and genetic engineer-
ing. The content should be easily accessible to undergraduate students, faculty, and
general readers interested in biology or bioinformatics.
As a motivating example, the rst ten chapters focus on bioinformatics
approaches to the study of antibiotic resistance. No previous experience in bioinfor-
matics is assumed. The last two chapters focus on the use of R to analyze and solve
biological questions. Users need to install R or R studio and related packages on a
local computer. Again, no previous experience in R/R studio is needed. All examples
and programming codes in this book are designed for beginners. These 12 chapters
can be used as the basis for a 6- to 12-week laboratory module. This book can be
used either stand-alone, or in conjunction with a lecture course.
