On Ratio and Proportion - The Common Properties of Quantity by Silvio Belli ISBN 9788888479064, 8888479066 instant download

This present tract is the second of Belli’s published mathematical contributions. It receives a brief mention in D. E. Smith’s compendious History of Mathematics* but neither author nor works are referenced in P. L. Rose’s authoritative The Italian Renaissance of Mathematics. This is understandable. The tract does not make any original contribution to mathematics, and that may be its value from an art historical viewpoint. It records the ordinary understanding of ratio and proportion as would be appreciated by contemporaries of Palladio. Despite Belli’s puffed up claims of improving upon Euclid, it largely rehearses the well-known definitions of ratio and proportion to be found in classical arithmetic.
