Musical writing does not merely serve to represent pre-existing or imagined sounds, but opens up a scene of musical thought defined by the four dimensions of operativity, materiality, iconicity, and performativity. Thus, the scene of musical thought is conceived as a musical writing scene. The theoretical aspiration of this volume requires us to consider a plurality of writing scenes. In addition to general approaches to writing theory, it primarily contains texts that address writing scenes from various eras and cultures. The contributions collected in this volume are grouped around seven categories: writing, performance, gesture; materiality, autograph, and textual dynamics; writing theory and operativity; writing, orality, and memory; musical notations and other writing systems; writing and digitality; notation and imagery.
