(Ebook) Living in the Environment by G. Tyler Miller, Scott E. Spoolman ISBN 9781285197289, 1285197283

Written "to help teachers achieve three important goals: first, to explain to their students the basics of environmental science; second, to help their students in using this scientific foundation to understand the environmental problems that we face and to evaluate possible solutions to them; and third, to inspire their students to make a difference in how we treat the earth on which our lives and economies depend, and thus in how we treat ourselves and our descendants."--Pref.

The problem with this and many others of its kind is that they pretend to show both sides - for instance here - advantages and disadvantages, but if it is a subject matter that is not part of their agenda, it always seems the disadvantages win out. Take Wind power. Do they show that even many environmenatlist dismiss this as a valid renewable given current technology?  Do they explain how the turbines chop up thousands of birds where they are in operation including the protected Bald Eagle?  Do they explain that the windmills produce a lot of noise polution?  They briefly mention that the wind dies down - but that is a minor because the advantages show that the ends justify the means - well this needs elaboration as well - China makes the parts, China supplies the energy to 'supplement' the wind. And yes the wind dies down more often then you think. Coal, Natural Gas, Oil - all bad... when the crippling regulations and policies make the production of these unsustainable from both a financial point of view so they get their wish - no more energy production, then what is going to drive those 'supplemental' energy needs to keep the turbines moving?  China again comes to mind.  And that is just a discussion on a single topic taken from the book on Wind turbines.
