Author: Joanna Demers
At times, it feels as if this is the sort of project for which one asks forgiveness in addition to acknowledging all the assistance and encouragement I got along the way. So first, let me say to all of you who put up with it: sorry about all the noise.
Certainly I would like to acknowledge and thank my advi-sors in the Texts & Technology Ph.D. program. Barry Mauer introduced me to the theory and avant-garde textual practices of Gregory Ulmer and encouraged my pursuit of academic work in alternative grammars. Anthony Grajeda taught me about and got me intrigued in the possibilities of sound and noise, turning me on to Steve Goodman (which led on to so many other fringe and para-academic theoretical works). Angela Rounsaville let me get away with digressive and fragmentary writing practices, works that intentionally jumped around (from film, to music, to culture, to theory), never settling. Mark Schafer, my outside reader, wasn't scared off by the unfamiliarity of the content or the methodology and kept me focused on the normative and practical possibilities of this work and noise theory in general. The latitude and encouragement that they all provided was what made this work possible in the first place.
