I should’ve known something was up when Jules asked to meet in person;
anything he had to say to me could’ve been said over the phone. As soon as I walk in,
Jules comes around to meet me with a panicked look in his eyes. “Asher, man, I’m
sorry! They just showed up and I couldn’t get rid of ‘em!”
“Whoa whoa, who?” I ask. “What’s going on?”
“Mr. Johnson, I presume?” a hollow, metallic voice calls from one of the nearby
booths.
We both turn to look, and see a telepresence drone sitting comfortably within
sight of the entrance. Unlike Blair and Unity, this thing could never be mistaken for a
genuine human being. It’s completely nude, with gray plastic skin and clearly visible
robotic joints. On its chest, a series of LED lights are arranged in a simple 12-point
grid like a number pad.
“Who’re you?” I ask.
“Oh, you wound me!” the drone says, dramatically pressing a hand over its chest.
“Weren’t you the one who requested this meeting in the first place?”
“So you’re the biohacker?”
“Geneticist,” they correct. “Please, I have standards. Come, sit, let’s see if we can
have a productive conversation.”
