(Ebook) Introduction to Clinical Ethics: Perspectives from a Physician Bioethicist by Saleem Toro ISBN 9783031308031, 3031308034

The idea of writing this book came to me after some random observations and reflections. While working in a large academic center, I noticed there needed to be more connection between the artistic-literature-based dimension of medicine, held primarily by ethicists, and the scientific-clinical one, practiced mainly by physicians. After spending quite some time in clinical practice, I had a decent understanding of the scientific foundations of modern medicine. At the same time, I was one of very few among my colleagues who were passionate about the humanistic aspect of medicine or what many scholars refer to as the Art of craftsmanship. After graduating from Internal Medicine training in 2018 and spending a handful of time educating myself about the field of bioethics, I realized that there is so much richness and depth to what we do as a physician beyond the mere fact of understanding physiology and following guidelines. The craft of practicing medicine was not only confined to biomedical healing but also involved learning how to talk to a patient suffering from terminal breast cancer or debilitating arthritis, how to console parents after their son’s death in the medical ICU, how to deal with an angry and frustrated family who lost all the trust in the rounding teams yet still hoping that someone could cure their sick patient, and how better to understand the nature of suffering as vulnerable physicians so we can relate more emotionally to our suffering patients.
