Monograph by Sylvia Serafimova “Helpless Universe’s Captive”. A Glimpse to Peter Wessel Zapffe’s Philosophical Heritage. A look at the philosophical legacy of Peter Wessel Zapffe" is an extensive study of the ideas of one of the most original Norwegian thinkers of the 20th century. The author examines Zapffe's key concepts in detail, from the theory of biosophy combining the methods of biology, bioesthetics and existential philosophy, to the original interpretation of tragedy, heroism and morality. Special attention is paid to the functional taxonomies created by the philosopher — systems of concepts and categories linking, at first glance, disparate fields of knowledge: aesthetics, ethics, drama, theology. The research covers the analysis of the "poetic-tragic" as a special artistic and philosophical phenomenon, the classification of catastrophes and forms of pessimism, as well as Zapffe's original approach to understanding religion, including the interpretation of the image of Jesus and Job from the standpoint of moral anti-tragedy. The book not only reconstructs the complex methodology of the Norwegian philosopher, but also shows how his ideas come together around a central problem — the search for meaning in conditions of human cosmic helplessness.
