 John Stephan's ability to read Japanese has allowed him to tap sources that have been unavailable to most Western authors. Although this book was published 30 years ago, it contains a lot of material that I haven't seen discussed in more recent books.
Stephan makes clear that prior to World War II Japan had a much closer relationship with Hawaii than many people realize. In 1941, about 40 percent of Hawaii's population was of Japanese extraction. Many first and even some second and third generation Japanese living in Hawaii felt strong ties to Japan. During an era when Japan was expanding its empire, some Japanese Hawaiians apparently hoped that the islands might eventually become part of that empire.
