The first and second editions of the textbook Haematology: A Core Curriculum, were under the sole authorship of Professor Barbara J Bain. Generations of haematology trainees and students from the UK and further afield have benefitted from Professor Bain’s dedication to haematology education, and in these editions, the clinical and laboratory features of blood diseases were presented in her characteristically clear and rigorous manner.
In the light of the scientific progress in haematology diagnostics and therapeutics, including next-generation DNA sequencing, targeted drug therapy, immune cellular therapy and gene therapy, Professor Bain decided in 2024, that a new edition was called for. It was proposed that this should be a multiauthor book, written by members of the Imperial College Centre for Haematology and affiliated hospitals.
This core textbook is based on the curriculum of our haematology teaching within Imperial College London, where the aim is to provide a foundation in the molecular and cell biology that underpins the pathology of blood diseases. Additionally, it discusses the clinical features of the common and important blood disorders seen in general and specialist practice.
