Two of Patten’s short novels are published here for the first time in book form. They share a theme—revenge—but otherwise they are worlds apart. “Gun This Man Down,” the title story, actually appears second in the lineup. It’s a solid, if not especially fresh, story of Matt Hurst, whose father and brothers are hung as cattle rustlers. It’s a good story, but it pales by comparison to the leadoff, “The White Cheyenne.” Julien Tremeau, son of mountain man Charles Tremeau, is living among the Cheyenne, with an Indian wife and children.
