Gun This Man Down: A Western Duo by Lewis B. Patten ISBN 9781594149092, 1594149097 instant download

In "The White Cheyenne," Julien Tremeau vows to seek vengeance on the white men who killed his wife Bird Woman and kidnapped his children during a raid on Chief Black Kettle's village; and, in "Gun This Man Down," Matt Hurst returns to the town of Granada to clear the names of his father and brother who were executed and branded as rustlers.
-
Two of Patten’s short novels are published here for the first time in book form. They share a theme—revenge—but otherwise they are worlds apart. “Gun This Man Down,” the title story, actually appears second in the lineup. It’s a solid, if not especially fresh, story of Matt Hurst, whose father and brothers are hung as cattle rustlers. It’s a good story, but it pales by comparison to the leadoff, “The White Cheyenne.” Julien Tremeau, son of mountain man Charles Tremeau, is living among the Cheyenne, with an Indian wife and children.
-
When soldiers surround their village and open fire, killing his wife and making off with his children, Julien vows revenge—on all white men. As he systematically stalks the abductors, killing anyone who stands in his way, Julien is counseled by his father, who urges his son to temper his vengeance with mercy. This is not merely a well-crafted story detailing one man’s revenge but also a thoughtful examination of the whole idea of revenge and the way it can warp a man’s mind until there is nothing left of him. --David Pitt
