An authoritative account of clinical and research applications of functional imaging techniques in child psychiatry.
Doody Review Services Reviewer: Stephen M. Delisi, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book is an ambitious review of the current state of functional neuroimaging in child psychiatry. It covers both the various techniques being used in child psychiatry as well as how these methods are being applied clinically in the pediatric population.
Purpose: The aim is to provide a current and thorough review of neuroimaging in the child psychiatric population. The authors address basic principles, methodological advantages and disadvantages, clinical applications and current findings, and future directions. They also attempt to provide a conceptual interface between the fields of neuroimaging and molecular genetics. These aims represent an ambitious and important endeavor and overall the book accomplishes this task well.
Audience: The authors cite an audience of clinicians and investigators for this textbook. The graduate student in neuroscience or cognitive psychology and the resident/practitioner of psychiatry with a strong interest in research will appreciate the extensive knowledge base amassed in this text. Authors who are all acknowledged experts in their fields write this book.
Features: This book has been logically subdivided into five distinct sections. Section one provides a detailed review of the current methods employed in functional neuroimaging. This section covers basic principles, specific techniques, and advantages/disadvantages for each method. Section two focuses on the ethical issues that are ever present when conducting pediatric research. Section three reviews the current body of knowledge on brain development and the cognitive neurosciences. Section four presents specific findings within various child psychiatric populations. Section five addresses the future of this field and its interface with molecular genetics and neurobiology. Finally, a thorough and extremely useful glossary is provided.
Assessment: As one trained in both basic neuroscience and clinical psychiatry, I found this text to be an exceptional reference on the current state-of-the-art in functional neuroimaging. The book's unique focus on the pediatric population certainly insures that it will stand apart from the multitude of neuroimaging texts available. The references at the end of each chapter are extensive and up-to-date and the overall organization of the book lends to its utility.
