33 reviewsA Quaker pacifist mentored by A.J. Muste, Hinke was a founder of The Resistance in New York. He began to interview war resisters in 1964, men and women who had been American political prisoners from World War I: "The Great War"; World War II: "The War to End All Wars"; Korea; Vietnam; the Cold War; Afghanistan; Gulf Wars I & II. As a peace movement leader, Hinke was uniquely placed to listen to resisters from many walks of life.
Military conscription still requires registration in the US and has expanded to more than half the world's counries.
In 2018-2019, he organized vigils by war resisters during each meeting of the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service and submitted five briefs. The Commission's final report advised keeping Selective Service and extending registration requirements, with legal penalties for failure to comply, to women, as well as retaining the so-called 'doctors draft' for experts in their fields. Their game was rigged.
Although two recent US Federal Court decisions found registration requirements illegal, the US draft grinds on.
This first edition chronicles primarily US war resisters. A broader international electronic edition is in process.
