This is a conversion to pdf.A Word from the AuthorThis book does not pretend to be an authoritative source of technical and historical information. It is simply a distillation of personal memories, observations and opinions garnered over 40 years of serving as both ground crew and aircrew in the Royal Air Force. The book selectively describes my pre-service days, my years serving as an air radar mechanic and technician and later, as aircrew, on both the Nimrod MR1 and R1. But most of all, it describes events that took place during the period of 1977–1981 when I served as an air electronics officer on the Vulcan B2s of No. 617 Squadron. In writing this book I have made no effort to refer to formal documents other than my flying logbooks, but I have used online media and other open-source literature to jog my memory regarding dates and events of historical interest. I have avoided naming some of those that I served with as I am unable to reach them to obtain their permission for inclusion in this book. Similarly, I am unable to contact most of those that feature in the photographs. I trust they will not be offended. It would be remiss of me not to take this opportunity to acknowledge the assistance provided by those who have helped me to gather and describe some of the information contained in the chapters that follow – they are too many to name, but they know who they are. I must also thank my dear wife, Jessie, who suffered in silence throughout the countless months that it took for me to recall, and put in writing, many of the experiences gained during my air force days. Her patience and help have not gone un-noticed. Finally, I would like to thank the small, but heroic team at Grub Street Publishing who took a big gamble in publishing this book. I will forever be indebted to them for their unflinching support, professional guidance and their belief in me and the story I had to tell. …
