Fall of Dhaka: Unravelling the Aftermath and Beyond by Xenia Alam instant download

To develop an understanding of the events leading up to the Fall of Dhaka on 16 December 1971 and its aftermath, a contextual understanding of the crisis of East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) is necessary. The separation did not occur in a vacuum, it took 24 years to materialise and reach boiling point in the March of 1971.
-
Pakistan was an unusual country at its birth on 14 August 1947. It had two wings which were separated by 1000 miles, with a hostile country in between. In addition to that, the only unifying force between the two wings was the religion of Islam, a reality that was felt by the people of both wings as soon as the euphoria of partition faded. A feeling of alienation and relative deprivation set in with the people of the eastern wing.
-
The discontent between East and West Pakistan can be attributed to several factors: the language issue, political and economic disparities, imposition of military rule and the 1970 elections, along with the situation in East Pakistan leading up to OPERATION SEARCHLIGHT, which then triggered the civil war in East Pakistan.
