in 1804, A Delegation Of Five Sauk Leaders Signed A Treaty With The U.s. Government Ceding All Of The Tribe's Lands East Of The Mississippi River. Although The Treaty Was Not Immediately Enforced By The United States, The Situation Would Change In 1822. That Summer, An Influx Of White Miners Arrived In Northwestern Illinois And The Southwestern Part Of Michigan Territory To Extract Lead From The Profitable Mines Of The Region. The Trickle Of Settlers Soon Turned Into A Flood: By 1829, Thousands Of White Settlers Had Moved Into The Region And Settled On Sauk Lands. The Following Year, Congress Passed The Indian Removal Act, Which Gave The U.s. Government The Legal Right To Force The Sauk And Other Tribes To Move West Of The Mississippi River. Most Members Of The Sauk Tribe Peacefully Moved West, But During The Spring Of 1832, The Elderly Sauk Warrior Black Hawk Led A Band Of Sauk And Mesquakie Indians Across The Mississippi River And Into Illinois. Although They Intended Simply To Return To Their Traditional Homeland And Grow Corn As They Had Done Every Year, Their Return To These Eastern Lands Sparked The Struggle Known To Many As The Black Hawk War.

this Detailed History Of The Removal Of Northern Indians From Their Ancestral Lands To The Western Territories Beyond The Mississippi River Focuses On The Sauk Indians Under Black Hawk. The First Chapter Gives An Overview Of The Federal Government's Indian Policy In The Years Between The American Revolution And 1832 And Points Out The Desire Of Americans To Take Over What Had Always Been Indian Land. This Chapter Also Touches On The Alliances Of Various Indian Tribes With The British And The French. The Book Then Moves To Illinois And The Specific History Of Black Hawk And The Sauk And Mesquakie Indians, Two Peoples Who Had Worked With The French Until The Early 1700s And Who Worked Together For Protection Later On. Their Problems With U.s. Regional And Federal Government Became Serious In The Early 1800s. The Third Chapter Covers The Conflicts Between Indians And Settlers In The Upper Mississippi Valley And The Disagreements Among Indian Tribes In That Area, Particularly In Regard To The Valuable Lead Mines That The Indians Had Worked For Thousands Of Years. The Fourth Chapter Describes How, By The Late 1820s, Sauk Leaders Had Broken Their Followers Into Two Parties, One—headed By Keokuk—preferring To Give In To The U.s. Government, And Another—headed By Black Hawk—determined To Hold Onto The Tribal Lands East Of The Mississippi. Subsequent Chapters Discuss The Events That Led Up To War And The Battles That Comprised It, Particularly The Battle Of Stillman's Run, The Battle Of Wisconsin Heights, And The Slaughter On The Banks Of The Bad Axe River, Which Led To Black Hawk's Surrender. In September 1832, Black Hawk Was Imprisoned Through The Winter In Jeffersonbarracks In St. Louis And Then Taken On A Three-month Progress Through The Eastern United States, Designed To Show Him The Power Of The Country. The Rest Of The Book Shows Further Sauk And Mesquakie Indian Removals Into Iowa And Beyond, Removals Of Indians From The Western Great Lakes Region, And Information About The Current Locations And Conditions. The Book Is Nicely Illustrated With Color And Black-and-white Paintings And Photographs And Contains Two Maps And Seven Sidebars With Original Letters Or Statements. The Text Is Followed By A Five-page Chronology, A Two-page Notes Section, A Two-page Bibliography, A Page Of Further Book And Website Sources, A Page Of Picture Credits, And A Five-page Index. The Book Is Part Of The Landmark Events In Native American History Series. Reviewer: Judy Dapolito
