    The human being who is the subject of healthcare, research, and education is a person with inherent dignity. As a partner in all these endeavors, one must be protected and treated with respect. Unfortunately, abuses of person have been recurring in recent history. Technological advances in healthcare have patients receiving more than what they should receive. The distinction between wants and needs has blurred. The dominant belief is that “for as long as it is available it should be given”. In research subjects, and when proven beneficial, are not available to them. In education, patients are made objects for learning, often without their knowledge or consent. Learners are abused and exploited.
    Private and public decisions must move from “what can be done” or “what is being done”. This moral behavior of all stakeholders as it relates to life and health is Bioethics.
    This manuscript was prepared by a practicing Catholic physician from the Philippines. It is a response to an expressed need from the Filipino health professional students for a simple relevant book to help them learn Bioethics. It is not a textbook. It is an orientation guidebook for novices in the study. It is not original. It is based on lectures heard and given by the author, publications in the Southeast Asian Center for Bioethics (SEACB) Newsletter, and University of Santo Tomas (UST) forums in Bioethics.
