Written in the same style that has made Ivor Horton a best-selling author, this third edition of his popular title is a comprehensive, ground-up tutorial! The third edition has been completely revised and updated, and is ideal for self-taught students and scholars enrolled in structured courses. The text and examples are progressive; each topic builds and expands upon the previous topic. Further, the book provides in-depth coverage of class templates, including an introduction to the Standard Template Library.

No prior knowledge of any particular programming language is assumed; the only requirement is a basic appreciation of elementary programming concepts. If you understand the basic notions of how programs worklike branching and loopingthis book is for you! Horton demonstrates all language elements with complete working code examples, and includes practice exercises at the end of each chapter.

Excerpts:

About the Technical Reviewer:  Gabriel Dos Reis graduated with a Ph.D in Mathematics. He is an
active member of the ISO C++ standards committee and an active contributor and
maintainer of the GNU C++ standard library and has served as release manager of the
GNU Compiler Collection. He is a regularly invited speaker at worldwide C++ confer-
ences.

The Standard for C++
In 1998, the International Standard for C++, ISO/IEC 14882, was finally approved and
adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International
Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS). This was the culmination
of nine years of work by a joint ANSI/ISO committee whose objective was to establish a
single definition of the C++ programming language that would be accepted worldwide.
Although at the time of this writing the 1998 standard is still current (2004), the work of
improving the language is ongoing and may well result in further features being added
to C++ in the future.
