INTRODUCTION
Ir’s NoT that little is known about the author—actually we
have a relative wealth of information about him. In addition to
his nine novels, of which Back is the sixth, he wrote a memoir,
Pack My Bag, in 1940 when he was thirty-five. There is also Surviv-
ing, a collection edited by his grandson Matthew Yorke, which
contains a number of stories, early works, essays, and reviews, as
well as an interview of him for The Paris Review’s Art of Fiction se-
ries, and Romancing, a lively and insightful biography by Jeremy
Treglown. He was admired and written about by some of the
most admired and written-about writers of his generation and
subsequent ones. He was socially visible, and various sets to which
he belonged included people who exchanged amusing, polished
letters with and about one another. But his character and life
are such a tumult of contradictions and incongruities, and his fic-
tion is so various, that almost anything one initially thinks to
say about him produces in one’s mind an equal and opposite reac-
tion.
