Applied Medical Statistics is an introductory-level textbook written for postgraduatestudents in the human life-science field, with most topics also being suitable for undergraduatemedical students. The ultimate objective of this book is to provide help indeveloping “habits of mind” for statistical thinking, and to establish a trade-off betweenmathematical derivation and know-how application among medical students.The most distinctive features of this book are summarized as follows: First, emphasisis placed on the most basic probability theory at the start of the book because, as thetheoretical pillar for almost all statistical methods, strengthening these fundamentalconcepts is of great importance for laying a solid theoretical foundation for understandingsubsequent chapters. However, for students to benefit from a practical andintuitive understanding of principles, rather than presenting abstract concepts, I haveminimized the mathematical sophistication, and introduced content in a user-friendlystyle to nurture interest and motivate learning. Second, I have based most of theworking examples on research projects that I have conducted or participated in, andsuch real-world settings, in my view, are more helpful for stimulating students’interest, as well as helping them to learn how to use statistical procedures in practice.Finally, although this is an elementary applied statistics textbook, it covers some commonlyused advanced statistical techniques, such as survival analysis and logisticregression. I also discuss fundamental issues in research design, and the inclusion ofthis content will greatly enhance the applicability and benefit to students who need toreference this book while performing day-to-day medical research.
