This book is about Airport Building Information Modelling. This is a term to deliberately highlightthe use of Building Information Modelling as a new methodology for airports. SinceBuilding Information Modelling is tightly linked with building construction, there isa prejudiced perception of BIM being useful only for buildings including existing or heritagebuildings but not for civil engineering projects such as highways, railways or other infrastructureprojects. Due to its nature, airport construction can encapsulate all the elements of constructiontypes, e.g. buildings, railways, auto parks, and roads. If BIM can be used in airport construction,why not for civil engineering projects too? The term “Airport BIM” refers to the use of BIMfor more complicated and sophisticated infrastructure projects, paving the way for BIM usebeyond buildings.If Airport BIM can be explained clearly using real data from a real airport project that isusing BIM, it will then be possible to widen the spectrum for BIM use and mitigate the prejudicedunderstanding about BIM use being limited to buildings only.Overall, the main purpose of this book is to identify how BIM can be used in airport constructionprojects to support design process, communication and coordination, concurrent design andconstruction practice, sustainable design and construction, construction planning and cost management,clash detection and timely procurement and effective facilities management. In addition, thisbook provides data and examples of a real case for BIM and Big Data Management. The holisticfocus is to articulate how to utilize BIM throughout all phases of an airport project in design, constructionand facility management. The chapters that follow clarify the substantial topics that shouldbe considered in utilization of Airport BIM, and respectively these chapters are: “Airport Designand Construction”, “Airport Building Information Modelling”, “Concurrent Design and Constructionwith BIM”, “Mobile BIM for the Airport Construction”, “Key Learnings about ABIM andPaving the Way for Airport Operations”, and “Conclusion”.The Istanbul New Airport project is briefly described in the next section.
