Advancing Socio-grammatical Variation and Change: In Honour of Jenny Cheshire by Karen V. Beaman & Isabelle Buchstaller & Sue Fox & James A. Walker instant download
Throughout her long and illustrious career, Jenny Cheshire has shaped the field of sociolinguistics. Her contributions span a broad spectrum, ranging from the development of multiethnic varieties and the ways in which linguists can influence educational policy to the impact of gender and adolescent networks on linguistic innovation and language change more generally. Most particularly, however, her name is associated with sociolinguistic research above the level of phonology: the analysis of variation in syntax, discourse, and pragmatics. To date, the sociolinguistic exploration of grammatical variation and change, which Cheshire has so relentlessly championed throughout her career, continues to be underexplored within the sociolinguistic enterprise. This volume pays tribute to and builds on Cheshire’s influential work in the area of quantitative analysis of socio-grammatical variation and change, revealing the breadth of research currently being done in this increasingly dynamic field. This collection showcases cutting-edge research from leading researchers in the field, with particular focus on syntactic, morphosyntactic and discourse-pragmatic variation and change. The contributors to the volume run the gamut of contemporary socio-grammatical analysis, from exploring new empirical methods for the collection and analysis of morphosyntactic and discourse-pragmatic variation and change to addressing the theoretical implications underpinning heterogeneity at these levels of linguistic structure. Overall, this volume provides a go-to collection of socio-grammatical variation, advancing our understanding of language variation and change as a holistic process.
